The Finnish noise rock duo NYOS presents a prophetic Celebration of the present. This album was crafted when the present was as radiant as the feathers on the cover art by animal photographer Zac Herr. Blending the dance - worthy grooves of Battles, Sonic Youth - inspired noise outbursts, and the longing electric melodies of And So I Watch You From Afar, Celebration is a loud, festive, and defiantly happy album. It's a great remedy for the dullness of our times. Despite having a name linked to a deadly lake in Cameroon, NYOS's music has always been full of energy and an upward drive. In 2012, guitarist Tom Brooke left Leeds in Britain and moved to Finland to build his own recording studio. There, he met drummer Tuomas Kainulainen, a veteran of the local punk scene. Their connection was instant and magical. In their early practice sessions, they created the amazing 26 - minute, six - part instrumental rock masterpiece Vltava in 2015, which already showed many features of their current loop - driven math, noise, and post - rock sound. Since then, the band has been constantly touring and recording, self - releasing three full - length albums and performing over 300 shows with acts like Zeal & Ardor, Esben & The Witch, and The Comet Is Coming. Recorded by Brooke in his Tonehaven Recording Studio, Celebration is the latest proof of the strong synergy these musicians have developed over seven years. With most of the material written before the COVID - 19 pandemic, it reflects pre - lockdown life, brimming with catchy grooves and bright melodies. Tom Brooke says about the recording process, which happened during the pandemic, 'We aimed for an upbeat sound this time to contrast the difficult times. We love it when people dance to our music, so we focused on the dance vibe.' This collection of eight vivid and striking tracks has subtle references to dance music worldwide. For example, 'Light' has a complex drum pattern like the Amen Break in drum and bass, but also an off - beat skank that ventures into experimental reggae. 'Tucano' is reminiscent of the experimental IDM of Bristol - based producer Vessel, and 'Gold Vulcan' combines a rough guitar riff with Latin - American and oriental melodies. The attention to detail on Celebration is remarkable. It has some of the band's most intricate compositions and is the first NYOS record with improvised live recordings, 'First Take' and the heavenly 'Cloudberry'. These musical sketches show the two musicians at their most in - sync. Whenever they seem to take an unexpected turn, you'll find yourself re - evaluating the song's meaning and what NYOS is all about. It all goes back to the drive that brought these two together. Tom's life - changing move to follow his dream, building his studio, and self - producing his records. He says, 'The idea of this band is to be free, do what we want, but also be ambitious, play our best, make interesting music, and tour great places!' Driven by their pursuit of freedom, boundless energy, and global perspective, NYOS's creative compositions create a sound that goes beyond their influences and the limits of their instruments. Celebration is not only a welcome escape from pandemic monotony but also a real celebration of the unique synergy between two musicians. It's the work of two free spirits, enthusiastic and dedicated to their craft, a passionate exploration of rhythm and repetition.
