'Let the Earth be Silenced by Night' is a truly enchanting yet somewhat isolating album. The third release from the Finnish post - rock sensation HORTE takes you on a dark and spellbinding journey. It's best enjoyed all at once, or you'll miss out on the dramatic musical arcs. HORTE demands your undivided focus. Nietzsche once said, 'If you stare long enough into the abyss, the abyss will also stare back into you.' This existential feeling is the very soul of 'Let the Earth be Silenced by Night'. Every musical concept is rooted in emotions, unfurling as the idea is formed, developed, and then cast into the void, only to reverberate back and find a bleak echo in the heart that birthed it. Listening to these echoes is incredibly therapeutic and a key part of the HORTE experience. HORTE's music seems intangible and ephemeral, yet honest and real. There are times when it feels like the band is pulling you in, but they never let you fully cross that boundary. Singer Riikka says, 'Our main goal is to keep the spotlight on the music, not on us as individuals.' Her otherworldly yet calming voice places HORTE's dreamy, psychedelically - distorted soundscapes in the far North. Alongside the vocals, the bass is the most prominent and tangible element in these soundscapes, standing firm among eerie synth clouds, broken beats, and a voice that shifts between subdued hopes and bitter laments. The band starts their song - writing with field recordings and sound collages. They gather materials from different sources, process them into a basic pre - composition, and then the whole band arranges the pieces. Riikka explains, 'We work with the material until the piece shapes itself. The sound follows, and there's always a big - picture idea of how the pieces should sound.' In 2017, the Finnish quartet released their self - titled debut album via SVART Records, praised for its rich atmosphere blending post - rock, shoegaze, and Nordic psychedelia. Ja Ja Ja Music said, 'Materialising as if from nowhere, it’s just possible the Finnish enigma known as HORTE really are from another realm.' The band made an impact at the 2018 Roadburn Festival and returned this year as part of the Pelagic Records showcase. 'Let the Earth be Silenced by Night' was recorded at the band's homes and at Tonehaven Studio in Tampere, Finland. Juho Vanhanen (Oranssi Pazuzu) worked on the production as an outside expert, and Saku Tamminen (Dark Buddha Rising) mixed the album. PopMatters says, 'Repeating verses as mantras, they have the power of dragging you amidst the dreamy domain that Horte has built.'
