BARRENS, a new trio from Gothenburg, Sweden, features 2 members of SCRAPS OF TAPE, a well - established band on Denovali Records with over 20 years of album releases and tours. Their last album, “The Will To Burn”, is an underappreciated gem. While there are musical similarities between the two bands, BARRENS creates its own unique sound on the debut album PENUMBRA. Driven by both synths and guitars, the album moves between the dark and bright sides of post - rock, with a tilt towards the dark. Conceptually, it revolves around themes of change, metamorphosis, and transformation, as described by guitarist Johan G Winther. The band members started touring together even before forming BARRENS. In 2018, Markku Hildén joined Scraps of Tape's live shows. Realizing their shared musical ideas, they began writing demos. PENUMBRA was recorded in 2019 in Uppsala and Gothenburg, produced by the band, and mixed and mastered by Magnus Lindberg of CULT OF LUNA. This album is a complex yet sophisticated piece, showing a level of maturity that doesn't seem like a debut. It's a creation born from a strong bond among the musicians, combining both positive and negative emotions in music.
