HYPNO5E has coined the term 'cinematic metal' with their truly epic compositions, often lasting over 10, and sometimes even 20 minutes. They blend contemporary metal elements with Latin folk and soundtrack - like sonic landscapes. After the acoustic special album 'Alba - Les Ombres Errantes' in 2018, this Southern French quartet is back with a more 'typical' HYPNO5E record. Their 5th album, 'A Distant (Dark) Source', is the second part of a diptych album project.
Each part will be released separately, starting with the second one. 'A Distant (Dark) Source' continues the band's pursuit of demons and lost memories that began with their debut album 'Des Deux L'Une Est L'Autre'. It's an inward journey to the land of past ghosts. The inspiration for this album comes from Tauca, an ancient Paleolithic lake in Bolivia where singer - guitarist Emmanuel Jessua grew up.
Lake Tauca vanished over 15,000 years ago, leaving behind arid lands and salt lakes like the Uyuni or Coipasa Salt Deserts in the Andes at 4,500 meters altitude. 'A Distant (Dark) Source' musically imagines a night in this desert, where the old lake shores see the return of the shadows of former inhabitants. A man returns to the lake to find the shadow of his beloved. The album tells this story of an ephemeral return, all set in one single night.
Don't be put off by the conceptual depth. HYPNO5E's sound is powerful, visceral, and immediate. At times, it brings to mind the expansive technicality of BTBAM, the careful melancholia of Cynic, and the raw power of Gojira. However, HYPNO5E's organic sound is truly their own. Unlike many bands relying on a single sound or technique, they aren't restricted by any pre - conditions.
