“Syndenes magi” marked the sixth album of Arabs in Aspic and was a significant turning point in their long - standing career. After “Pictures in a Dream” and “Victim of your Father’s agony”, the new style of the band was firmly established. They had a bunch of songs ready, but after watching an amazing King Crimson concert in Oslo, they felt their new material wasn't good enough and aimed to do better.
The next day, Jostein Smeby returned to Trondheim and penned the 12 - minute song «Syndenes Magi». He then contacted cover artist Julia and asked for keywords for a concept album. Julia provided keywords related to anxiety, which inspired the creation of the rest of the album.
Originally written in English, numerous attempts to make the vocals fit the music failed. Smeby then tried writing a verse in Norwegian, and it worked. Subsequently, the whole album was redone in Norwegian. Released by Apollon Records in the fall of 2017, this album with only Norwegian lyrics gained a lot of international attention.
Jostein Smeby said, “Remixing this album was the toughest project we've ever taken on. We were really satisfied with the original record, so if we were going to remix it, the result had to be even better. The band didn't fully agree on a remix, but the composer had some unfinished business with English lyrics.
I tried singing the original English lyrics again, and it still sounded bad. So, I deleted all the Norwegian vocals and kept working until it improved. Working on the remix and remaster of «The Magic of Sin» took more than twice the time it took to write, record, and mix the original version.”
